Leadership

This will be principally a coastal expedition, where fastboats will form the most important component of our equipment inventory. Operating in seas often crossed by streams of sharp brash ice (rubble from collapsed icebergs), the boats will need to withstand collision with ice as well as landings onto rocky shores. In these conditions heavily constructed and unsinkable hulls are mandatory.

Scandinavian boat manufacturers, SILVER of Finland, will supply our fastboats. Their unique two-component structure – marine aluminium hull and reinforced plastic interior – is unsinkable and designed for the worst of Scandinavian weather conditions. These boats will be ideal, and safe, for the summer conditions found in East Greenland.

For work within narrow fjords or small reconnaissance initiatives, we will use Quicksilver heavy duty inflatables, powered by Mercury 4-stroke EFI motors.

To power the boats we have selected Mercury Verado 4-Stroke motors. They are scientifically tested as the most eco-friendly outboard ever created. Their secret is the patented fuel injection system invented in Australia which delivers extraordinary fuel efficiency: a truly green engineering product. We will carry a comprehensive store of spares and selected team members will be trained in field servicing and repairs from Mercury Marine.

Each boat will be fitted with VHF radio, GPS navigator, emergency beacon, medical equipment, signalling flares, anchor & chain, rock anchors & hand winch and 200m of mooring warp. Fishing gear will also be carried. Hunting equipment will be carried by Peter the Hunter.

While we are at sea, all Expeditioners will wear ocean waterproofs and lifejackets and carry a personal emergency signalling device as well as a personal VHF radio, GPS navigator and personal medical equipment.
